<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For those who love adventure, rustic and get out of the routine and busy city life, Kuna Yala (also spelled Guna Yala); at least for us, every time we go there is just love at first sight. Couldn’t ask for a better cultural experience to live among the Kuna, this is not for everyone but just need to be prepared. So get out there, be flexible and enjoy.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Chichime is one of the group of islands in San Blas; it is a medium-sized island, walking around takes up to 20 min. It is less crowded as the others islands and Chichime has the most deserted beaches. It has beautiful white sand and palms trees, the water is crystal clear and the beach is just magical with calm and warm water.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The hospitality and food offered by the family really make the difference in comparison to others islands and cabins.
<span style="font-family: "verdana";">

have their own rules and Panamanian law doesn’t much exist. Their main income

Meaning this, as soon as you embark on their small boats, you are in the hands

why on our side we can only recommend the cabin of our friends

understand that San Blas is still very basic. The Kuna operating there have not
all studied Hospitality Management, Logistics, Gastronomy, nor Tourism. There
has been a big “boom” during the past years and they have not been trained for
that and some just want you to experience their lifestyle in their own comfort

except to be a little squeezed as 7 passengers can fit into the car. As well,

If you are looking for an economic solution and are fine with dorms or private rudimentary cabins and ready to mingle with others guests, mostly young backpackers, we recommend you Franklin Island Cabins.

On our last visit in November 2017, Dorms of 4-6 beds were quoted below 30$ the night with and private cabins below $45 the night with all meals. You can negotiate tours on side and the boat transfer from Carti to Franklin islands was charged $20 round trip.

You can book your stay in Franklin through different local agencies, hostals or directly on Airbnb:

Off the beaten track in a green and historic area in the middle of Panama-City

We live in Panama-City and our dream as many others residents is to stay in the same green and peaceful area as Dos Palmitos and feel some of the Panama Canal History.

The 1920 refurbished house is located in the former Canal administration area; it is a great location to access all of the top attractions in the city either via cab, bus, metro or walking. It is also quite close to the large Albrook mall, the domestic Marcos A. Gelabert Albrook airport and the Albrook bus terminal.

You can walk to the Casco Antiguo (old town) and also enjoy a “rainforest” morning walk up the Ancon Hill for a magnificent Panama-City Skyline.

The house consists of 4 convenient rooms with their own bathroom and A/C, a common area with ceiling fan and a deck by the backyard with a feeding station where you can watch hummingbirds and toucans fly overhead.

The breakfast is delicious and delightful with fresh and local fruits with some from the Dos Palmitos garden, if “madre tierra” allows it.

A B&B never runs well without a great Host, Jacques is the Man, he will always look after you and propose his help to arrange anything you need during your stay. He is a great and honest person with plenty of energy and speaks perfectly French, English and Spanish. He will commit to make your stay in Panama-City safe and wonderful.

For more information and reservation, please contact directly Dos Palmitos through their website and do not miss to check their Facebook page.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">On the Panama Canal your experience begin with Miguel, he was born, raised and still living in a fisherman and farmers little town in La Chorrera. With a big smile on his face he remembers when he was little and how he used to play and swim at the shores of the Lake Gatun; with no clothes.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">When he was younger, he worked as a fisherman on his spare time so he could pay his studies and helped his family. Graduated from the university, he started to work for a private company, unfortunately he lost his job in 2006 and then decided to take the risk and buy a little boat to open a new business.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Nowadays, Miguel is a grown up man, he is a field tester for Rappala and is certified by the ACP ( Autoridad del Canal de Panama ) for security and transportation of people and tourism in the area of Gamboa and Lake Gatun, he perfectly knows the flora and fauna in the area.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">He remembers with joy and sacrifice how difficult was on the early days and his purpose now, is to teach to the new generation his passion and offer his personal service to visitors and tourist of what he knows best… Lake Gatun!

We recommend you to chose Mr Florez for your transportation in Panama. We have used their service many times for our own trips to the airport and can certify they are very reliable.

The company has been founded by Mr Angel J. Florez H. in 1985, he had at that time only one yellow cab. Nowadays, they have fleet of modern and comfortable vehicles serving with quality and safety national and multinational companies and as well the tourism industry with all operational certificates requested.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It is the home to the first female President of Panama, Mireya Moscoso (1999 to 2004) and her private airport has been develop into a public one with 3 weekly flights (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) of around 40 minutes. Otherwise, if you would like to drive it is a 4 to 5 hours drive from Panama City, you can also take a bus from Albrook at Panama City (Terminal de Buses de Albrook) to either Chitre or Las Tablas, then need to take a connection bus up to Pedasi. Easy!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">All the tours we are promoting will be experienced with our friend and captain Eytbar who is a very cool and energetic young man. He loves to share his life experiences and interests (fishing, surfing, nature) with everyone. When he was a young boy, he used to go Playa Arenal waiting for his dad to take him out fishing and observing the whales with always the objective to learn from his dad and educate future generations.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Today he owns his own boat “lancha” and has almost 8 years dedicated to the tourism in Pedasi, bring clients to Isla Iguana, fishing, surfing and whales watching. He is also a member of an environmental association in the Pedasi area. He is as well a member of a foundation for childrens with leukemia and cancer. Peace.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There are many "Cabanas" in San Blas, but we recommend you one Island Isla Del Diablo which is owned by our Kuna friend. It is in front of Isla del Perro (Dog Island). It is a great place for snorkeling, as there is a nice reef and a shipwreck. The island is situated at 45 minutes from the San Blas dock.
Santa clara beach is the most famous beach near Panama-City. It is located in the Coclé province and only 110 kilometers from the City. You can go by car or public transportation the beaches are 90 minutes away from the Capital. It is the perfect stop to eat a fresh fish on the Pacific coast or stay overnight or longer before you travel further or decide to stay in the area and explore the others places nearby such as the highlands in El Valle or Altos del Maria.
Although Santa Clara beach is often overlooked by visitors to Panama, it has pretty much everything you could want. It is the longest beach in the area, lovely sand, and a number of restaurants and accomodations. You can rent out your rancho with hammock for the day for around 15 dollars.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">You have 3 options! Plane, boat and by Car:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> 1) By car, we do not recommend you to go there with a rental car as you will have to pay more taxes (5 dollars to enter into Guna Yala + USD 5 the night) and your car will stay overnights at your own expense but we have posted a map on how to get there with your own transportation.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The road to San Blas through the densely forested jungle highlands of Panama is operated by licensed 4×4 transporters. Our friends are the pionners of the road to San Blas since decades, they leave Panama City daily between 5am and 5.30am or at noon. The drive is approx 2.5-3hrs, depending on road and weather conditions.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The 4×4 transporters can hold up to 7 passengers, it can be a little squeeze. It is recommended to take only small bag with you for your stay and leave your main luggage at your hotel (if possible). For they way back, they will pick you up at the port between 9am and 10am or in the afternoon around 4pm. They are always in touch with our Kuna friends to coordinate your arrival, don't worry, just be patient sometimes.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Both way: USD 80 with Kuna Yala entry taxes. If you do not want to share the taxi with 7 people and would like more space, they also offer private charter for USD 400.00 (both ways) without Kuna Yala entry taxes
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> 2)By plane, you better take the plane if you want to go to the south of the San Blas Islands. Check Airpanama.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> 3)By boat, (transport and sailing boat) are passing through the San Blas Islands. You can take them from Colon (Panama) or Cartagena (Colombia). There also some "lanchas" going from Miramar (Panama) to San Blas. As we have not experienced it and listen more bad stories than good stories, we cannot recommend you this mode of transportation.
Michael, tells me many people are asking about places to go in Chiriquí and stay at eco-friendly agro-touristic places.
We have a sheep, goat and worm farm in a teak plantation just off the Interamericana in San Juan de Oriente between San Félix and San Lorenzo.

We are just finishing three guesthouses with three double rooms each and one has an additional dormitory. They will offer relatively comfortable accommodation for short or long-term visitors. Until these new houses open, we will continue to welcome guests at the main house.

We offer tours of the farm during which we explain our philosophy of integral agriculture. We think and try to work in cycles. For example, the wood shavings from our sawmill become the beds of the animals and after a week or two go to the worm farm (along with our compost) where they become organic fertiliser after the worms have worked on them for two months. And then, the fertiliser goes to the green house and the plantation to help the vegetables and forage and the trees grow.
Short- and long-term interns are welcome on our farm, as we think it is important to offer such an experience to young (and older) people.

Our workers can also profit from the interns’ experience and from working with foreigners. Not one of them speaks a work of English, so it is an excellent opportunity to practice your Spanish.

Panama is a tropical country which means you can expect, sun, high temperature, rainfall and high humidity. The average year-round temperatures are a balmy (24°C-29°C), varying only with altitude. The lowest temperature can be experience in the Chiriquí Highlands and El Valle or Altos del Maria, for example, 18°C, and these are the only areas in Panama where you will likely feel cold.
Humidity is always high in Panama, and rainfall varies noticeably between the Pacific and Caribbean sides of the country, with some areas in the Caribbean receiving almost twice the yearly rainfall of Panama City. Based on our experience there is not a best time to visit Panama. Travellers are recommended to travel during the summer dry season from mid-December to mid-April which is also the high season, no-rain not guaranteed! Some hotels and resorts charge higher rates during this period and the sea can be rough which is a disadvantage as well for boat transportation, snorkelling activities, etc. During the low season, the sea is very calm between September and October and you can enjoy as well very sunny days. May to August are characterized by sudden, heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon that are short in duration, and can happen every few days. Often, the skies are sunny in the morning or afternoon.

Sea can be rough

Low Season (mid-April–early Dec)

Corresponds with “rainy season” in the country

Our friend Pascal who visited us in January posted our San Blas trip on Youtube. This is the island we highly recommend to travellers. Secretsofpanama@gmail.com
We took the opportunity during our September 2014 trip in Isla del Diablo to take picture of the cabins as many of you are asking us about what to expect ?

Again, all cabins are very basics in San Blas and you must be flexible!. Herewith the picture of the cabanas inside/outside and the bathrooms.

Yes, we do and love it! Altos del Maria 1.5 hours from the city

We have decided to publish our secret place, Altos del Maria.

Altos del Maria is a private residential community between 500 and 1000 meters above sea level and just 1.5 hours from Panama City and 30 minutes from the beach.

For us, staying in Altos del Maria over our weekends is an escape, fresh air, beautiful natures, trails, canopy towers, lakes, it is like living in a national park and better than any others mountain places we have visited so far (El Valle, Boquete, Cerro Punta). They have done great job in creating easy access to over 10 nature trails (including one along the river) over 1.6 miles in length, more than 12 look-out points where you can see the Caribbean and the Pacific Oceans, 3 bird watching towers and an artificial lake has been built at 900 meters above sea level with more than 20,000 fish stocked to attract eagles and other species of birds. Statistically, over 30% of the 944 species of birds in the country have been spotted in Altos del Maria. For this reason, a large handful of serious bird watchers have made of Altos del Maria their permanent home. But still... travelers can get there (you will need to rent a car) and we can recommend you some cabins through our expat friends living there. The night costs between 65 - 150 dollars for a small house or cabins (for 1 to 4 people) + 25 dollars cleaning fee for your stay. We usually spend two night there and sometimes we also take the opportunity to go to the beach and return to sleep in the mountains. There is as well a private paved road which goes to El Valle to enjoy the Sunday's market.

We definitely highly recommend Altos del Maria. Please contact us for any booking with our friends living there. Herewith some pictures of Altos and small houses for rent. By the way, the featuring houses are for sale as well! secretsofpanama@gmail.com
Unfortunately, we cannot provide any good companies but can update you on the following: We have met lots of travellers in Panama, San Blas and have been reading lots of stories as well.

We have received more negative inputs (space, seasickness, bad service, expensive, security) than positive comments. Make sure you choose the right sailing boat! or fly to Colombia with Copa airlines or air panama (new route to Medellin) for less than usd 500 which will be even cheaper than the sailing trip.

We suggest you to better visit San Blas by road transportation, stay 3 days on the islands and fly to Colombia! Be aware the some sailing boats are operating in Comarca Kuna Yala without any permit and the Panamanian government is notoriously absent with regards to these sailing vessels that regularly and routinely ferry travellers from the San Blas islands to Colombia. Secretsofpanama@gmail.com Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13225478857425001872noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3352359470733153350.post-18698903764838390172014-08-11T08:46:00.000-07:002015-10-05T16:51:59.376-07:00How much costs a taxi in Panama-City ?For a tourist, taking a cab in Panama-City can be very irritating. No taxi meter are available and not all taxi are honest! So you better know approximatively what you should pay for a ride and agree on the price before to jump in.

You will into link herewith attached the official rates by area and a map that we suggest you to print and show to your taxi driver if needed. http://www.transito.gob.pa/tablas-tarifa-de-taxis. As a basic rule, if you stay in the same area, you should not pay more than 1.20usd per person and the second person should pay less.

Obvioulsy, if you reserve a taxi or take a cab in front of a shopping mall you will pay more. *If you are looking for a taxi driver to drive you through the city and or outside, please let me know, was can always arrange something with some professional driver that we trust. Secretsofpanama@gmail.com

2) Avoid renting a car at Tocumen International airport - A) If you don't understand Spansih and are in a hurry, B) people are anxious to get the car and get gone without checking to see what they've agreed to and C) when they return they are in a hurry to catch their flights and will not argue with lame, fraudulent claims or overpriced add-ons.

3) Don't rent a car if your plan is to only get to Bocas del Toro - By the time you add up all the costs for a rental car, the airfare doesn't look quite so expensive. Also, keep in mind that the express busses from Panama City to Almirante and return are no slower than what you can drive that distance. It's a very long and tiring 10 to 13 hours in a car

4)Our suggestion: You will be better off picking up the car at Albrook (Gelabert) Domestic Airport because the traffic is less rough than the other areas in the city and you will be closer to the Corredor
Norte if you plan to go to Portobelo or the American bridge if you plan to drive along the pacific.

You will avoid experiencing the traffic and the lack of signs in Panama-City. There are many agencies, Dollars Car rental is OK
